What is Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and how does it work?

Superfast internet without having to wait for fiber in your street. Sounds great, right? That’s exactly what Fixed Wireless Access – or FWA – makes possible. In recent years, this technology has made huge progress thanks to the evolution of 5G. And that opens up new opportunities for fast, stable, and affordable home internet.
In this article, we explain what FWA is, how it works, and how DIGI uses it as a reliable alternative to fiber.
What is FWA?
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is a technology that provides fixed home internet using wireless 5G signals. Unlike traditional mobile internet (like the 5G on your smartphone), FWA is designed specifically for fixed use. It’s a high-quality alternative to classic wired connections such as coax or fiber.
How does FWA work?
A dedicated router or modem receives the 5G signal from a nearby antenna and converts it into Wi-Fi inside your home. This way, your whole house gets internet, without needing new cables to be installed in your street. And because it runs on 5G, known for its high speeds, FWA delivers a strong and reliable internet experience.
FWA vs. fiber
Both FWA and fiber offer fast internet, but they rely on different technologies:

FWA as a reliable alternative to fiber
Fiber remains the fastest solution wherever it’s available. But the rollout is still ongoing, meaning many streets and neighbourhoods can’t be connected yet. In those cases, FWA offers a reliable alternative: a fast, future-proof connection without having to wait for fiber to arrive in your area.
The benefits of FWA
|
Quick installation FWA can be installed much faster than traditional wired solutions. |
Stable connection Because it uses the 5G network, FWA provides a strong and reliable connection. |
No waiting for fiber With FWA, you instantly get a future-proof internet connection that grows with your needs. |
